A balloon is an elastic sheet of material that can be filled with air, helium, hydrogen, nitrous oxide, oxygen, and air. Balloons can also be filled with smoke, water, sand, or light sources.
At the earlier times, balloons were made of dried animal bladders, such as the pig bladder. Since its invention, balloons have been used for various purposes, from meteorology, medical treatment, military defense, transportation, decorative, and entertaining purposes.
The word 'balloon' has various origins. 'Ball' or 'large ball' is translated into 'ballon' in French and 'balla' in German. Folks from Northern Italy called a 'ball shaped bundle' a 'balla', whilst Proto-Indo-European 'bhel' means 'to blow, swell, inflate'. It is also possible that 'ballon' originated from the Latin word 'ballone.'
The first mention of similar products is found in Karelian-Finnish epics, the history of Ancient Rome and Aztec civilization, in literary descriptions of bright medieval carnivals. However, it is difficult to call them prototypes of modern latex balls we call balloons.
In 1824, Michael Faraday, a college professor, invented the rubber balloon. He used them in experiments with hydrogen at the Royal Institution in London. He made a rubber balloon out of two sheets of rubber which he covered with flour on the inside so they would not stick to each other but leave edges uncovered and pressing them together. It is important to note that balloons created in Faraday’s time were not exactly balls, but "bags" made up two sheets of rubber with flour poured between them. Also, Faraday placed sheets of rubber bags into an airtight pocket and filled them with a range of gases. As a result, he discovered that elastic bags filled with light gas acquire lifting power.
A year later, Thomas Hancock began producing a do-it-yourself balloon kit, which included a syringe and a bottle of liquid rubber. The balloon kit helped to create well-formed rubber balls. The first rubber balloons were sold in 1825 but they were more science experiment than toys.
22 years later, J.G. Ingram designed the first balls made of vulcanized rubber in London. Outwardly, they were very similar to modern balloons.
In 1907, an Ohio rubber company, the American Rubber Company, began manufacturing and selling rubber balls. Five years later, the company expanded its product lines and established the production of the world's first oblong balloons.
15 Years later presented a turn of events that warranted the New York authorities to impose a ban on refueling balloons with hydrogen when people were injured in the explosion of hydrogen filled balloons. After this unfortunate event, balloon manufacturers began to fill balloons with helium. Since helium is inert and cannot ignite or explode under any circumstances, it has since become the gas of choice to achieve buoyancy in balloons.
In 1931, Neil Tylotson founded Tillotson, a company specialized in the production of latex balloons and gloves. Tillotson discovered a way to make latex balloons economically, due to desperation and boredom after he lost his job as a researcher at Hood Rubber, due to the Great Depression in the 1920s. His first product was hand-painted balloons in the shape of a cat's head. He is considered the inventor of the modern production of latex balloons.
In the 1970s, foil balloons came onto the scene. They were more expensive but held gas inside longer than rubber and latex. From this point forward, balloons have become ubiquitous, taking on a modern form, and are made from materials such as rubber, latex, or nylon fabric. They also come in various shapes, sizes, patterns, prints, and colors.
In recent times, balloon styling has grown as an art form, and has become a highly specialized field within the event decoration industry. With the increase in manufacture of balloons has been a surge in the rise of balloon designers and stylists creating designs of varied quality. Consequently, contemporary balloon decoration is evolving, so that although many balloon designers maintain the predictive traditional technique of styling balloons, a new class of designers are arising that are into huge, intricate designs.
